Spring Training & Safety: 5 Essential Tips for Wisconsin Dog Owners

Spring in Wisconsin is a beautiful but busy time for dog owners. Between the "mud season" and the return of ticks, there is plenty to talk about!

As the Wisconsin landscape finally traded its winter white for spring green, May brings a refreshing energy to our outdoor adventures. Whether you’re walking the trails at Kettle Moraine or just enjoying your backyard in Kenosha County, spring presents unique opportunities—and challenges—for dog behavior and safety.

To help you and your "lucky dog" make the most of the season, here are five essential tips for a successful May.

1. Master the "Leave It" on the Trails

May is a peak month for Wisconsin wildlife. From emerging critters to the tempting (but often toxic) spring blooms like Lily of the Valley, your dog’s curiosity will be at an all-time high.

  • The Goal: A reliable "Leave It" command is a lifesaver.

  • Pro Tip: Practice in low-distraction environments before heading to busy spots like Petrifying Springs Park. Use high-value rewards to compete with those enticing spring scents!

2. Navigating the "Mud Season" Manners

We all know Wisconsin May can be rainy. This often leads to muddy paws and the dreaded "zoomies" when you try to wipe them at the door.

  • The Training Opportunity: Use this time to practice "Four on the Floor." Reward your dog for staying calm while you handle their paws. It builds trust and keeps your floors much cleaner!

3. Tick and Heartworm Season is Here

With the warmer weather, ticks are officially back in action across the Midwest.

  • Stay Vigilant: After a hike, perform a thorough "nose-to-tail" check. Pay close attention to the ears, underarms, and between the toes.

  • Holistic Support: Keeping your dog's immune system at optimal level will help ward off parasites of all kinds. If you'd like to know how strong your dog's immune system is right now, purchase a BioScan from Pine Hill Farm and I'll be able to tell you! 4. Socialization at Local Dog Events

May kicks off the season for outdoor events and agility trials. It’s a great time to evaluate your dog's social skills.

  • Check the Calendar: Look for local events such as farmer's markets or outdoor training meetups.

  • Know the Limits: If your dog seems overwhelmed by crowds, keep sessions short and positive. Socialization is about quality, not quantity!

5. Mind the Heat (Yes, Even in May!)

While we aren't in the dog days of summer yet, Wisconsin's "feels like" temperature can jump quickly.

  • Hydration: Always carry a portable water bowl and cool water. If the asphalt is too hot for the back of your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

  • Scheduling: Aim for walks in the cooler morning or evening hours to avoid the midday sun.
