As the June sunshine rolls in, our routines with our dogs naturally change. We’re out on the trails longer, enjoying patio dining, and spending sunny afternoons in the backyard. But June also brings hidden stressors for our pups—from sizzling pavement to early summer thunderstorms.
If you want to keep your furry best friend safe, calm, and well-behaved this season, you aren't alone. These are the top summer dog care and training challenges owners face this month, along with expert advice from Lucky Dog Behavior & Training.
1. Mastering the "Hot Weather" Walk
When the summer heat strikes, standard exercise routines can quickly become dangerous. Pups don't sweat the way we do; they rely on panting and their paw pads to cool down.
To keep your daily walks safe and enjoyable, use this quick checklist before heading out the door:
The 7-Second Rule: Place the back of your bare hand firmly on the pavement. If you cannot comfortably hold it there for 7 seconds, it is too hot for your dog’s paw pads. Stick to the grass or opt for an early morning walk.
Ditch the Flexi-Leash: Summer crowds mean more distractions. A standard 6-foot leash gives you better control on busy trails or outdoor patios. Besides, flexi-leashes are hazards in other ways. They break easily and give you far less control.
Bring Water Everywhere: Dogs lose moisture rapidly through panting. Always pack a collapsible bowl and fresh water, even for brief outings.
2. Pre-Glow Training: Prepping for July 4th Fireworks
While the main event is a month away, June is the absolute best time to start preparing your dog for fireworks and summer thunderstorms. Waiting until July 3rd to address sound sensitivity is a recipe for a stressful night.
How to Desensitize Your Dog to Loud Noises:
Play low-level sounds: Week 1. Find a high-quality audio clip of fireworks or thunderstorms online. Play it at a barely audible volume while your dog eats dinner or plays with a favorite toy.
Pair with high-value rewards: Week 2 Slowly increase the volume over several days. The moment the sound plays, rain down their absolute favorite treats (think boiled chicken or freeze-dried liver). If they show signs of worry, turn it back down and keep going.
Don't forget supplementation! Herbal supplements that promote calmness and relaxation include: ashwagandha, chamomile, L-theanine or L-tryptophan, melatonin, valerian root, or passionflower - or a combination of those. You can find them in a variety of treats, but I recommend these:

3. Patio Etiquette: Training a Reliable "Settle"
June means dog-friendly restaurant patios are finally open! However, a dog who barks at passing strollers or lunges for dropped French fries won't make you many friends.
Before you take your dog to a crowded cafe, practice the "Go to Mat" or "Place" cue at home. Bring a specific small blanket or mat to the patio with you. Reward your dog heavily for keeping all four paws on that mat and remaining in a down-stay while you eat. This gives them a clear "job" to do and prevents them from scanning the environment for trouble.
