Summer's here, and while we love soaking up the sun, the heat can pose challenges for our furry friends. But that doesn't mean dog training has to take a backseat! Here at Lucky Dog Behavior & Training, we're all about keeping things positive and productive, even when the temperatures rise.

Trending Topics in Summer Dog Training:

  • Focus on Short, Positive Sessions:  Ditch the long training marathons. Opt for shorter, focused sessions that are more enjoyable for your pup in the heat.

  • Embrace the Indoors:  Take advantage of air conditioning! Work on basic commands or teach new tricks inside during the hottest part of the day.

  • Water, Water Everywhere:  Hydration is key! Keep fresh, cool water readily available during training sessions. Short water breaks are essential.

  • Scent Games are the Rage:  Stimulate your dog mentally with scent work games. Hide treats indoors or in shaded areas outdoors for them to sniff out.

  • Frozen Fun:  Beat the heat with some DIY frozen enrichment toys. Fill a Kong toy with peanut butter, yogurt, or broth and freeze it for a refreshing challenge.

Bonus Tip: Poolside Training (with Caution):

Is your dog a water enthusiast? Poolside training can be a fun way to cool down and practice basic commands. Remember:

  • Safety First:  Never leave your dog unattended around water. Ensure they have a gradual entry/exit point and keep sessions short.

  • Positive Reinforcement Only:  Reward calm and confident behavior in the pool. Don't force your dog if they seem uncomfortable.

By following these tips and staying cool, you can keep your dog training on track and strengthen your bond with your furry friend all summer long!
